Delta reported losses this quarter and predicted another loss due to the rapidly expanding Omicron variant in the first three months of the year, but forecast travel will begin to recover again by the end of February.
The airline crew, who were on the sidelines due to winter storms and Omicron infections, contributed to the cancellation of more than 20,000 U.S. flights across the industry between Christmas Eve and the first week of January. Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, said Monday that about 3,000 of the nearly 70,000 American employees are positive about Kovid.
Flight cancellations have become significantly easier in the last few days. Delta has since said operations have stabilized and 1% flights were canceled last week due to Omicron.
After announcing the quarterly results, Bastian said in an interview with CNBC's Squawk Box that employees who tested positive had "no serious health problems." ..
Late last year, Delta updated its sick leave policy for employees who tested positive for Covid-19, offering five days off pay outside the sick bank and two more days pay if positive on the fifth day. Previously, employees had 10 days paid leave for covid infection without regular sick leave. This happened after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated the Quid quarantine guidelines and halved the recommendations in five days.
Delta and other airlines have requested the CDC to make changes.
The largest flight attendant union in the United States has criticized the Delta policy. Last week, Sarah Nelson, chairman of the Flight Attendants Association, told staff across the workgroup that Delta "should get a remarkable job, even if someone in the family is positive." Tweeted. He added that positive workers were told that "if the fever is less than 100.9, they will work after 5 days, even if they are still positive."
Delta wrote a ceasefire and cessation letter to the union for the president's remarks. Union Airlines wants to organize flight attendants, one of the last non-union flight attendant groups in the United States.
Bastian defended the policy, saying it was based on CDC guidelines.
