California employees first sued Apple in 2013, and in 2015 the process became a classification activity. Employees have claimed that Apple imposed "mandatory and embarrassing" bag checks on them. These checks were done after the shift was over and the staff stayed at work for another 10-15 minutes.

According to Apple, bag searches have confirmed that employees do not hide stolen electronic devices in their personal belongings. Apple argued that employees who did not want to look for bags could simply avoid working on the bags, but that argument ultimately did not work for Apple, and in 2020 the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said. Apple said employees would have to pay for the time they spent finding the bags.

Lawyers for Apple and Apple employees in California reached a settlement last year and asked judges to approve it in November. Apple has agreed to pay about $ 30 million, and the more than 14,000 employees involved in the operation will be paid based on the individual shifts they work. Current and former employees will receive emails and letters from Apple with specific information about possible payments.

Bag search policy has long been obsolete and Apple has not searched bags since 2015. The final approval hearing for the settlement will be held on July 7, 2022.
