The rocket extends four landing gears from the base as it descends towards Landing Zone 1, one of SpaceX's two rocket landing pads at the military launch station. A single Marlin engine that can be throttled to control the rocket's synchronous speed provides the ultimate thrust for landing the rocket on a concrete pad.
SpaceX typically lands a Falcon 9 booster on a drone for space-carrying missions or flights carrying payloads into high-altitude orbits.
For launches with a light payload, the booster has ample propellant reserve and can use the booster backburn to rotate itself immediately after stage separation. The same thing happens with Thursday's launch.
The upper SpaceX, on the other hand, runs a single Marlin engine for 6 minutes to reach a parking track while flying over the Straits of Florida, Cuba, and the Caribbean. The mission's first satellite payload will be separated from the carrier pod for at least 59 minutes on the mission. The final payload T + Plus will be released in 1 hour 27 minutes.
