The gate that proudly displayed the name of Kampara Godwinds Elementary School has been removed. The grounds where the students played during the break are now parking lots for trucks carrying goods to nearby markets, while the classrooms are tourist lodges.

Schools in Uganda were ordered to reopen on Monday, January 10, after being closed for almost two years, the longest school closure in the world, but not everyone was able to welcome students. Located on the Calewayway in the Kauempe district, Godwins is one of many schools that never reopens. Feeding children whose parents work at the nearby Karelway market has been around for 20 years.

Harriet Namville, a charcoal dealer whose two grandchildren, eight and ten, attended school, said the closure was "an accident that happened to us."

He said, "The school owner called the meeting and they said to us,'It's very difficult for us to run again. We can't open it.'" "It was like lightning or something [attacked us]. Some of the parents who attended the meeting fainted. Some have been ill for weeks."

In the suburbs of Kampara, there are many haunted buildings that were once schools. Some buildings were sold and some were demolished for real estate development. Kampala capital officials say more than 40 schools in the city have been permanently closed. Local media is fascinated by the news that the school has been transformed into a bar, restaurant and tourist dormitory.

There are no official statistics on the number of schools that could not be reopened nationwide.
